Do you have magazines that you love to publish your work in or to send your poems to? I used to read quite a number of magazines before submitting to them. I don’t do that so much anymore but I suppose I still read independent authors here on Substack.
I was pretty proud of this poem I as I managed to use a single image of the vanilla pod as the core of my poem. Have you written something like that? Where you thought of the image that could anchor your poem together? I came up with this because of the title - that it had the word ‘root’ in it. After that, I wanted to play with that image and thought about thinking of a vanilla orchid - mainly because of what vanilla means - boring, ordinary, often overlooked but just as important as a flavour; just like the people that are mentioned in my poem, overlooked but super important.
If this inspires you to write a poem with a similar theme, do share in the comments. I can’t wait to read it.

Nilofer, I loved your reflections on artists and story-tellers. As an elementary school teacher and Head of School for many, many years, I loved young children's art. It peaked in third grade and then kids became more aware of how they stacked up in their own estimation and were less eager to take chances. As a grandpa, and reader to children at Barnes and Noble, I know the value of storytelling. Wonderful poetic piece.

Love this. I'm all about the underdog!
